Instead of crying over the lost hair…

The hair designer, Eli Ben-Zikri, that dealt himself with cancer, understands the women loosing their hair during the treatments.

Today he operates two hair salons in Kaplan & Belinson Hospitals, where he gives women a haircut for free and uses the hair to design wigs for the sick women

  Keren Ohayon, La'Isha magazine

As an experienced hair designer for years, Eli Ben-Zikri knows a thing or two about the connection of each woman with her hair. But he didn't realize how many emotions are involved in it. The chemotherapy he went through due to him getting ill with cancer changed his life and made him realize that women losing their hair feeling they're loosing control over life.

"I met women that cried when they realized they are going to loose their hair, even more than when they were told about being ill". When he cured from his cancer, he initiated PELE [Hebrew for miracle, the initials stand for wigs for every woman] organization.

I am obligated to have every hospital in Israel cooperate with me, which will: 1) give free haircuts and in turn the hair will be transferred to make wigs and 2) have sick women and personal measuring of wigs. When I initiated this project I haven't imagined that it would turn to be the center of my universe and will require a full time job! Never imagined that there is such a need, which is, of course, very sad but it makes me happy to know I'm helping as I can!"

Ben-Zikri says that this is a unique project worldwide, and he is splitting his time between Belinson Hospital in Petah-Tikva and Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot. The service is given to women, men and children with cancer that are treated in the hospitals, free of charge!

His clients say that he is attentive, sensitive, gentle and kind. He himself admits that the work is, sometimes, hard to bear. "I find myself cutting hair with tears in   my eyes".

Ben-Zikri is a wig expert and on top of giving the wigs to the women, he nourishes it [for free] in shampooing, blow drying and styling them from time to time.

Now, he wants to broad the projects to other hospitals all over the country, and for that- needs hair designers that are willing to give hair cuts voluntarily. They will go through a special training about dealing with sick women in their hardest period. Ben-Zikri says hell be glad to hear about other hair designers willing to have women with cancer in their private businesses. Additionally, hair donations for wigs are needed.
