On Wednesday this week thousands of volunteers carrying plastic bags have swept open areas in Israel as part of the annual "Clean Up the World" international initiative, which will be held in Israel for the seventh time this year. The yearly clean-up operation is sponsored in Israel by the Jewish National Fund (JNF). Last year, some 170,000 Israelis took part in the operation and collected 1,400 tons of garbage in forests, JNF picnic areas and open fields outside city centers. The Clean Up the World organization, which was founded in Australia 15 years ago, is today one of the largest international groups for the preservation of the environment. Over 250 million people in 120 countries have taken part in the organization's activities until today. During the special day, JNF held special events in its forests, including operations bringing together Arab, Bedouin and Jewish students, as well as IDF soldiers. So far, the annual clean-up day has been an independent initiative of the JNF, but it recently received legislative backing with the passing of a new law mandating a national clean-up day in the country. |
